Class vision

To position the University of Cincinnati as a leader in student philanthropy, leveraging our institutional commitment to experiential learning, to create an outstanding culture of philanthropy that will support our students ethical, civic, and professional competencies on campus and beyond. We envision social responsibility as a pillar of the Bearcat mindset.

Detailed class description

The Doing Good Together: Student Philanthropy Studio honors seminar is designed to give students hands-on experience in philanthropy by researching University of Cincinnati or UCH-Affiliated organizations who receive support already via discretionary funds established by the UC Foundation, developing criteria for charitable giving, and ultimately re-allocating a portion of $20,000 funds to organization of their choice.

Students will learn about how funds are established and sustained in partnership with the UC Foundation and will act as stewards of these funds, seeking to grow their impact while upholding their purpose as established by the gift agreement legal documents. Through this process, students will gain a deeper understanding of the ecosystem and impact of philanthropy on campus and develop a philanthropical mindset.

The course will be a partnership between the UC Foundation, the Honors Program, CCPS (Cooperative Education and Professional Studies) and DAAP. The Foundation will provide the funds to be dispersed. The use of the term “studio” reflects creative ways of experiential learning, and it is borrowed from design and the arts to emphasize the process of developing and implementing an idea or concept.

Expected outcomes

The course’s expected outcome is to unpack the philanthropical process for students, examining donors’ motivations and goals, establishing criteria for giving, exploring different approaches to philanthropy and determining means of assessing impact. The goal of the seminar is to foster a new generation of philanthropic leaders for the university, community and beyond by teaching UC students how to “do good” in society within an ethical framework.

Course learning outcomes

  1. Students will acquire foundational knowledge about philanthropic processes before graduation to increase intentions of participating in future philanthropic activities.
  2. Students will reflect on their values, skills and passions and discern how to use them to support philanthropic needs within the context of an ethical framework.

  4. Students will increase their understanding of the impact of philanthropy by utilizing data driven strategies.
  5. Students will develop a philanthropical mindset by participating in experiential student philanthropy that helps prepare them for both workplace competency and citizenship.
  6. Students will research and evaluate philanthropic organizations to establish ethical criteria for giving and make informed decisions about investing funding in philanthropic organizations.
  7. Students will create "Public Narrative" stories that communicate the value of philanthropic organizations to stakeholders and interrogate socio-cultural problems that lead to the need of the philanthropy.
